- Credit cards remain the predominant payment method in European e-commerce.
- The new payment methods Maestro and giropay are gaining importance in e-commerce.
- Other credit card providers than Visa and MasterCard increase their market shares.
- With a share of still more than 80 %, the credit card is still the most important payment method in e-commerce.
- British consumers already use Maestro for one out of ten payment transactions.
- German consumers continue to prefer direct debiting, but its share is declining further.
- Outside Germany and the UK, other payment methods than credit cards play almost no role.
- The shares of MasterCard and Visa are almost equal in Germany.
- Visa is clearly predominant in Europe as a whole.
- The average value of purchases paid for by online payment methods is considerably higher than that of purchases paid for by offline payment methods.
- Despite the lower overall share, average transaction values are higher for MasterCard and other credit card payments than for payments effected by Visa.
- giropay has the largest share in transaction values above EUR 500.
- Purchases worth less than EUR 10 are most often paid for by Maestro.
- Visa increases its market share in e-commerce at the expense of MasterCard
- “Other credit cards” (mostly American Express, Diners Club and retailer credit cards) are mainly used by German and non-European customers.
- Women pay for one out of seven transactions by “other credit cards”.
- Share of MasterCard payments is almost identical for European men and women in all shops.
