Non-payment risk
  • Chargeback ratio in e-retailing declined again from a record low in the preceding year.
  • E-retailers suffer less from the effects by the financial and economic crisis and from fraud attempts than other e-commerce sectors. Only seven in 10 000 transactions fail.
  • Using the 3-D Secure technology helps to push down the overall chargeback ratio further.
  • E-retailing is suffering less from fraud attempts, which benefits both online merchants and consumers.
  • Non-payment risk was considerably down for direct debits. Only every 55th transation fail (last year: every 34th).
  • European merchants run the lowest risk of non-payment if their customers come from Germany and use cards for payment. Only two in 10.000 transactions fail.
  • In comparison to the previous year, "Verified by Visa" is more effective than "MasterCard Secure Code".
  • Using 3-D Secure is helpful for merchants in any case, as the non-payment risk decreases.
  • Chargeback ratios are lower and success rates higher for women than for men. 
  • Men are more fraudulent in online retailing than women.
  • As in the preceding year and as in overall e-commerce, the chargeback ratio is highest in Bremen. 
  • Currently, Saarland is the state which offers the highest payment security in e-retailing.
  • E-retail merchants can also rely on people from Lower Saxony to pay their debts.
  • The chargeback ratio does not rise above 0.19% in any German region.
